Job description
Embark on a journey with Global Karting League (GKL) to revolutionise the next generation of motorsport. Founded by former Ferrari F1 engineer Rob Smedley, the Smedley Group businesses use F1 technology to solve complex problems, fast.
As one of these businesses, GKL offers young drivers a level playing field, an affordable entry into motorsport, and a credible new pathway to the top of the sport. We've already taken the UK by storm with our electric karting championships and have our sights set on rapid global expansion. Our aim is to reach 50 international championships within 5 years. To succeed in this mission, we’re looking for talented individuals who share our passion for motorsport and desire to succeed.
As the Technical Director of GKL, you'll be joining the company at a pivotal growth stage and take the lead with:
- Being responsible for all technical and engineering functions relating to the Global Karting League.
- Leading and developing a growing team of engineers as they complete various design and development projects.
- Improving the technological output at track events and ensuring seamless event delivery.
- Creating workflows from ideation to testing to customer deployment for all engineering-related components.
- Working cross-functionally with departments like Event Operations, Sales, Marketing & Customer Experience to better define and execute the product development roadmap.
- Improve the level of technology for both karts and all associated devices that are necessary to create a seamless and repeatable event delivery.
- Providing strategic leadership and driving the long-term technical strategy for GKL’s engineering and product development.

- You are a self starter who will be able to work across the varying demands of a start up environment which means in the short term applying your skills directly across the whole engineering function.
- You have excellent communication and collaboration skills, working effectively with internal teams, external partners, and stakeholders.
- You bring a strong sense of ownership and accountability for your team’s performance and the company’s overall success.
You Have:
- A master’s degree or environment in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Cross-functional experience and a collaborative approach to work.
- An excellent work ethic and experience working in highly demanding environments.
- The right to work in the UK.
Experience:
- Around 10+ years of experience working in high-performing engineering roles which have specialised across mechanical engineering electrical/electronics engineering.
- Project planning experience to plan from ideation to track delivery.
- Experience working across multiple engineering disciplines, with the ability to supervise and be hands-on when necessary.
